Abstract The foundation of the legitimacy of a modern government is its political legitimacy,that is,a government should be identified with and supported by its people in four aspects—political ideas and values,political system,economic and social policies,and management performance and consequences . The degression of modern government legitimacy creates great stress and poses serious challenge to the existence and operation of a government . Based on the reality of current China,this paper does a thorough exploration and examination of the main causes of the degression of government legitimacy,and suggests countermeasures to maintain and strengthen the legitimacy .
