Cihua is an important carrier of criticisms in Ci studies. In the wake of the new century, compilation of Cihua has been flourishing, promoting the development of Ci studies. However, problems also surface in this process, which require further consideration. The ever-growing volume of materials on Ci studies leads to a breakaway from the forms of Cihua and its methods of collection set out by Tang Guizhang in his Collection of Cihua (Cihua Congbian), and thus expanding the frontier of Cihua. More materials and forms of Ci studies have since been put under “Cihua”, rendering it complete yet disorganized. Consequently, it is necessary to categorize these materials according to their own characteristics in compilation and present them clearly. When doing so, it is of utter importance to select the base copies carefully and to provide the information either in the text or in its preface. This is especially true for Cihua materials from the late period of the Republic of China, when the materials were published through various channels. This has made it a fundamental task to indicate their publication time and their volume numbers. Compilers can have different compiling standards and processes, so it is also possible that the same work by the same Ci poet may be compiled under different titles with different numbers of volume and contents. As for newly compiled Cihua, not only is their numbers limited, but the selection is also short of harmonization. The titles of these newly compiled Cihua can be very different when compiled by different scholars and can even deviate from the original works. While compilers agree that completeness is one of the priorities given that compiling is much more convenient these days with more materials being found, they can be rather indiscriminate by including into their works Cihua that are merely pieced together from other sources, or that lack originality. Again, this is particularly important for Cihua materials from the late period of the Republic of China, which come in large numbers but mixed quality. Compiling these materials requires much selective work, so as to meaningfully theorize and categorize Ci studies in this period and to ultimately construct it in a more accurate fashion.
