Abstract:The rapid development of digital publishing is facing profound changes in strategy, technology, and industry in the new era. There is an urgent need to reconstruct its development. While existing research has provided a detailed description of the practical aspects of the digital publishing industry, it lacks theoretical construction and fails to effectively connect theory with practice. This paper explores the critical trends in digital publishing in the new era from the perspective of its value foundation, reflecting on how innovations in theory and practice can promote high-quality development in this field.
Possessing both cultural and economic attributes, the healthy development of digital publishing not only provides economic support but also fulfills the mission of serving the Party and the people, achieving dual effectiveness. Currently, digital publishing products like online literature are pivotal supports for cultural prosperity in the new era, bolstering cultural confidence for building a strong cultural nation and national rejuvenation, while narrating Chinese stories and voices through cultural export.
Although digital publishing has made significant strides in going global, there remains room for deeper engagement. Under the influence of constructing a Chinese-characteristic philosophy and social science system, new liberal arts education, and internal crises within the publishing sector, an awareness of disciplinary self-awareness has surged, spurring a wave of theoretical construction in digital publishing. As a key element of publishing, technological advancements have triggered shifts in publishing entities, products, processes, and spaces. Cutting-edge technologies like AIGC will further drive industrial upgrades in digital publishing.
Theoretical studies on digital publishing are transitioning from empirical summaries and interdisciplinary theoretical borrowings towards independent theoretical construction, yet challenges remain regarding fragmented theories, lack of uniqueness, and questionable applicability. To address these issues, we propose reconstructing digital publishing theory from the three perspectives of systematic development, specialization, and applicability for the purpose of expanding the knowledge system from theoretical origins, reinforcing the Chinese characteristics of digital publishing with problem-oriented approaches, and applying digital publishing theory to practices of knowledge co-creation.
Ultimately, theory finds its grounding in practice. Returning to the thriving industry, this paper proposes exploring practical pathways for digital publishing in the new era. Based on products, driven by technologies, supported by talents, aimed at dissemination, and secured by governance, we envision a five-pronged approach for digital publishing: crafting premium digital content and services, promoting integrated publishing development through technology, enhancing intellectual support for digital publishing, elevating international influence, and deepening governance capabilities.
